Card networks take stablecoin payments into production

Visa and Mastercard both moved stablecoin money movement closer to everyday use this week, while a US bank embedded Ripple's stablecoin in its core 123. Cross-border networks and AI-driven payment workflows also widened 45.

Which way the market is moving

Card networks take stablecoins live

Visa and Mastercard both moved stablecoin payments into commercial products this week 12.

Visa announced that Visa Direct stablecoin capabilities are advancing from pilot stage to commercial deployment, the next phase of its stablecoin strategy 1. Mastercard and BVNK launched a global money platform that brings fiat and stablecoin payments together 2. Supporting infrastructure arrived at the same time: PPRO tapped Damisa for stablecoin settlement, and Episode Six launched Verified Backing, real-time backing verification for tokenised money from its Token Control Ledger 1112.

Demand is less certain. Payments Dive reports that businesses view stablecoins warily, even as stablecoin startups push payments modernisation forward and bring incumbents along 1314. In Korea, Toss and Gwangju Bank are trialling stablecoin QR code payments 15.

What it means: Stablecoin flows may reach financial institutions through existing card and push payment relationships rather than new rails. Treasury, reconciliation and fraud teams need a view on how these flows are settled, reported and screened.

Questions for vendors:

  1. Which of your stablecoin features are in commercial production today, and which remain pilots?
  2. How are stablecoin settlement flows reconciled against fiat ledgers and reported to us?
  3. How do you verify the reserves backing the tokens you accept or settle in?

Stablecoins move into bank cores as crypto firms buy licences

Cross River embedded Ripple's stablecoin in its operating system while Payward and Polygon Labs bought regulated footholds 367.

Cross River Bank is partnering with Ripple to embed the Ripple USD stablecoin into its operating system 3. PYMNTS reports the integration is meant to power 24/7 global money transfers 16. ClearToken, a UK market infrastructure group, formed an alliance with Consensys focused on 24/7 settlement for banks 17.

Crypto firms are also seeking bank status. Kraken parent Payward plans to buy Lithuania-based Saldo Bank, an upgrade from the Ireland-issued electronic money institution licence it now holds, with terms not disclosed 618. Polygon Labs completed its Coinme acquisition, bringing regulated payments coverage across 48 US states 7. Vast Bank formed a payments partnership with Cliq, whose services include crypto and stablecoin solutions 19.

What it means: Competitors now include crypto firms holding bank or payment licences, and partner banks offering always-on settlement. Financial institutions should expect corporate clients and correspondents to ask about weekend and out-of-hours settlement.

Questions for vendors:

  1. Can your platform settle outside banking hours, and on which rails?
  2. How would a stablecoin sit alongside ACH, wires and card flows in your ledger?
  3. What licences do you and your partner banks hold in each market you serve?

Cross-border networks widen and partnering spreads

Ethiopia joined PAPSS and several banks and platforms bought cross-border reach from specialists 42021.

The National Bank of Ethiopia has officially joined the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System network 422. Western Union and dLocal expanded their partnership in Africa remittances, and Pawapay won a payments licence from the Bank of Mozambique 2324. Taptap Send expanded to Bahrain with a Central Bank of Bahrain payment licence 25.

Banks and platforms are also buying cross-border reach rather than building it. Vivid selected Wise Platform for international payments for its European SME customers 2026. NBB partnered with TerraPay to avoid costly cross-border integrations 2127. Unit added SWIFT payouts to more than 190 countries, and J.P. Morgan Payments is powering Mercado Libre's global selling expansion 2829.

What it means: Partnering for cross-border reach is now a common pattern. Institutions weighing build against partner should compare corridor coverage, price transparency and concentration risk on a single provider.

Questions for vendors:

  1. Which corridors do you serve directly and which through intermediaries?
  2. How are FX margins and fees shown to us and to end customers?
  3. What is your exit and data portability plan if we change provider?

AI agents enter payment and spend workflows

Stripe reported a sharp rise in agentic commerce as spend platforms connected to AI assistants 530.

Stripe President John Collison said the company's agentic commerce activity went 'vertical' last month 5. Wix said Symphony by Wix, its multi-agent system for small businesses, now connects to Link, Stripe's digital wallet 10. PEX launched PEX AI, which runs multi-step finance workflows and connects to AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT 30. Extend shared its AI Receipt Agent with bank partners for their SMB customers 31.

Fraud control is the counterweight. At Sibos 2026, Pay.UK described using deterministic and probabilistic AI to keep everyday payments fast and safe from fraud 32. JPMorgan will livestream a fraud-fighting event to 700 branches as the cost to victims soars 33.

What it means: Agent-initiated payments will test authentication, consent and dispute processes. Institutions that issue cards or run business accounts should know how partners identify and limit agent traffic.

Questions for vendors:

  1. How do you tell an AI agent's transaction from one made by the customer directly?
  2. What spending limits and consent records apply to agent-initiated payments?
  3. How are disputes handled when an agent made the purchase?

Account-to-account rails and scam liability

UK and New Zealand developments put account-to-account payments and scam refunds in focus 343536.

At Sibos 2026, Nationwide and Form3 discussed how banks are handling the UK's Retail Payments Infrastructure Board transition and growing payment rail complexity 34. In New Zealand, the Commerce Commission said open banking is cheaper for businesses than Visa and Mastercard debit 35. Bottomline said banks can harmonise fragmented payment infrastructures into unified, API-enabled ecosystems 37.

Scam liability is also in the courts. The Times reports that a ruling opens the door to bank refunds over the £170m Vashi diamond scam 36. NatWest, Nationwide and HSBC joined the CFIT financial inclusion coalition 38.

What it means: Cheaper account-to-account rails and wider refund exposure push in the same direction: more real-time volume and more pressure on fraud controls. Australian institutions with NPP and PayTo programmes face similar questions.

Questions for vendors:

  1. How does your platform support several real-time and account-to-account rails from one integration?
  2. What fraud and scam signals do you share across rails before a payment is released?
