AI build-out runs ahead of measured returns

A report found only 8% of fund managers see improved investment returns from AI, while firms keep embedding AI in engineering and markets work 156.

A report covered by The Economic Times found only 8% of fund managers report improved investment returns from AI adoption 1. Investment firm EXANTE has spent six months embedding an autonomous AI developer, Codey, into its engineering teams, reporting a 75% success rate with humans keeping control 5. Its experience suggests the main barrier to AI-led software delivery is organisational rather than model capability 5.

Deutsche Bank has implemented an on-premise AI platform across its capital markets and investment banking teams in Europe and North America 6. AI is spreading through delivery and front-office tooling while evidence of better investment outcomes remains thin 16.

What it means: Business cases for AI in investment platforms are safer when framed around measurable operational gains rather than return uplift. Where models run, including on-premise options, is becoming part of the buying decision.

Questions for vendors:

  1. What measured outcomes from AI features in production can you show at firms like ours, beyond pilot results?
  2. Can your AI components run on-premise or inside our own cloud tenancy?
  3. What human review and approval controls sit over AI-generated code, analysis or recommendations?

AI-native advice platforms draw talent and capital

New wealth and personal finance platforms built around AI agents launched or hired senior figures this week 21011.

A former HSBC executive has launched a wealth platform powered by a team of AI agents, the South China Morning Post reported 2. AI wealth advisory platform FAYBL has appointed Xplan co-founder Andrew Walsh as President 10. Swedish AI-native personal finance platform Matters emerged from stealth with a $5 million pre-seed round 11.

Research reported by The Times of India points to AI's growing role in financial planning alongside the continuing value of professional advice 12. These entrants place AI at the centre of the advice workflow rather than adding it to existing tools 21011.

What it means: Incumbent advice and planning software will increasingly be compared with AI-first entrants. Institutions offering advice need clear lines on where licensed human responsibility sits when AI agents draft or deliver it.

Questions for vendors:

  1. Which parts of the advice process do your AI agents perform, and which require an adviser's sign-off?
  2. How do you record and evidence AI-generated advice content for audit and complaints handling?
  3. What is your roadmap for AI in planning and advice tools over the next 12 months?

Wealthtech funding rises, led by large deals

Global WealthTech funding surged 3x year on year in Q3, driven by growth in deals over $100m 3.

FinTech Global reported that global WealthTech funding surged 3x year on year in Q3, driven by growth in deals over $100m 3. Across fintech more broadly, more than $2.8bn was raised in one week across 17 deals, up from $1.33bn the week before 13.

Smaller rounds targeted investment infrastructure. Fission raised $10m in a Series A to build liquidity infrastructure for tokenised investment funds 14. Zaria Systems secured $5.2m in seed capital, led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, for real-time mark-to-market infrastructure for credit and structured finance 15. VestGen Wealth Partners obtained growth capital from Willow Tree Credit Partners to address advisor succession 16.

What it means: Well-funded vendors may move faster on product, but funding stage matters for supplier risk. Tokenised fund and structured credit infrastructure is attracting early capital and is still at seed and Series A stage.

Questions for vendors:

  1. What is your current funding position and runway, and who are your major investors?
  2. How would a change of control affect our contract, data and service levels?
  3. For tokenised fund products, which custodians, registries and regulators are already involved?

Investment data and execution link into core platforms

MSCI launched SignalLab and SGX FX expanded its BidFX integration with BlackRock's Aladdin 78.

MSCI has rolled out SignalLab, a platform that combines governed, research-based signals from several investment domains with tools for investment teams to test and deploy them at scale 7. SGX FX and BlackRock announced an expanded integration between BidFX, SGX FX's cloud-based FX execution management platform, and BlackRock's Aladdin platform to streamline institutional FX trading workflows 8.

Both moves bring research or execution closer to the systems where portfolio decisions are made 78.

What it means: Buyers can expect more prebuilt links between research, execution and portfolio systems, which may reduce integration work but deepen dependence on a few central platforms.

Questions for vendors:

  1. Which research, execution and order management platforms do you integrate with natively today?
  2. How are signals or data governed and versioned when they move into our portfolio systems?
  3. What would it take to switch away from the integrated platform if we needed to?

Cyber and compliance costs land on wealth firms

Fortnum Private Wealth paid $1.35m to resolve a cyber case, and research found firms juggle nearly 14 compliance systems 49.

Fortnum Private Wealth has paid $1.35m to resolve a cyber case, Professional Planner reported 4. Separately, research from MCO (MyComplianceOffice) found financial services firms juggle nearly 14 compliance systems, with much new compliance spending absorbed by fragmented technology 9.

The ACSC issued an alert on cyber security risks to operational technology and edge devices, with mitigation advice for organisations that operate this technology 17. Cyber control and compliance tooling are showing up as direct costs for wealth and financial services businesses 49.

What it means: Licensees and platforms should treat adviser-network cyber controls as their own risk, and consolidating overlapping compliance systems may free budget for better controls.

Questions for vendors:

  1. What cyber controls do you enforce on adviser and practice users of your platform?
  2. How do you support our incident response and evidence obligations after a breach?
  3. Which of our existing compliance systems could your product replace, and how is data migrated?
