Agentic payments test authorisation and fraud controls

Agent-driven commerce is growing, and commentators say it strains the idea of an authorised transaction 13.

Stripe President John Collison said this week that the firm's agentic commerce activity went "vertical" last month 1. Skyfire, which provides identity and payments infrastructure for AI agents, expanded its partnership with Forter to help merchants approve legitimate agent-driven purchases and target fraud in agent checkout 5.

PYMNTS argued that agentic payments are about to break the meaning of an authorised transaction 3. Finextra asked how banks can future-proof payments for agentic AI and digital assets 8, and IBM published a view on separating signal from noise in agentic threats to banking 9.

What it means: Institutions that issue cards or run accounts will need to decide how an agent's instruction maps to customer consent, disputes and fraud liability before volumes grow. Fraud models and dispute workflows built for human checkout may not recognise agent behaviour.

Questions for vendors:

  1. How does your platform identify an AI agent acting for a customer, and how is the customer's delegated consent recorded?
  2. How are agent-initiated transactions flagged in fraud models and in dispute workflows?
  3. What evidence do you retain to show a transaction was authorised when an agent placed it?

Agentic AI reaches live treasury operations

Centalion and Komgo put agentic AI into live treasury operations, and Bank of America discussed agentic treasury automation at Sibos 2026 26.

Centalion and Komgo said they have brought agentic AI into live treasury operations 2. At Sibos 2026, Bank of America discussed the evolution of AI and agentic automation in treasury management 6.

Finextra asked whether agentic AI can transform self-service experiences for corporate banking clients 7. Together, the three stories place treasury and corporate client servicing among the first areas where banks and their partners are putting agents into live use or public discussion 267.

What it means: Treasury teams looking at agents should set clear limits on what an agent may execute versus recommend, and keep existing approval and segregation controls intact.

Questions for vendors:

  1. Which treasury actions can your agent execute without human approval, and how are those limits configured?
  2. How are agent decisions logged for audit and reconciliation?
  3. How does the agent behave when market or account data is missing or stale?

Compliance automation runs into legacy limits

A UK mortgage group automated case oversight with AI, while Duna warned that legacy compliance systems could undermine AI gains 104.

Specialist Mortgage Group, the Cardiff-based owner of Y3S Loans, Y3S Bridging and Commercial, and Chase Blue Loans, has deployed Curvestone AI across its advice and quality-control operations to automate mortgage case oversight 10. Farsight said it has brought secure AI workflows to Deutsche Bank 11.

Duna, which works on structured AI readiness, warned that financial institutions are layering AI onto compliance operations that were never built to support it 4. It said that mismatch could undermine the automation gains many are chasing 4.

What it means: Automated quality control and compliance review depend on clean case data and complete workflow records. Institutions should check those foundations before scaling AI review across files.

Questions for vendors:

  1. What data and case history does your model need, and how does it handle gaps in legacy systems?
  2. How are AI findings on a file reviewed, overridden and logged for audit?
  3. Can we sample and re-test automated quality-control outcomes against human reviewers?

Ledgers and reconciliation built into finance software

10x Banking is powering the ledger behind Tungsten Automation's Pay+, and Wolters Kluwer added automated bank reconciliation to Genya 1213.

The Paypers reported that 10x Banking is powering the ledger behind Tungsten Automation's Pay+ platform 12. That places a core banking ledger inside a product from a business automation vendor 12.

Wolters Kluwer introduced conversational AI and automated bank reconciliation into its Genya cloud suite for Italian professional service firms and SMEs 13. Both announcements bring functions that usually sit with a bank, such as ledgers and reconciliation, into software that firms use to run their own finance operations 1213.

What it means: Business and SME clients may increasingly reconcile and move money inside third-party finance software. Institutions should expect more of their data flows and payment instructions to pass through these platforms.

Questions for vendors:

  1. Which ledger and payment partners sit underneath your platform, and how are client funds held?
  2. What bank data feeds does your reconciliation rely on, and how are API changes handled?
  3. How are reconciliation exceptions surfaced and resolved?
