Mortgage software vendors put AI agents to work in origination
nCino launched an AI productivity suite for mortgage loan officers, Blend signed a tenth lender to its AI-powered platform and MeridianLink's AI document agent went live with three lenders 123.
Which way the market is moving
- Origination software vendors are moving AI from announcements into live lender use, with Blend at ten lenders and MeridianLink's document agent live with three 23.
- Investors are funding AI-native mortgage platforms, with Vesta raising a $30 million Series B 45.
- Credit decisioning is reaching beyond bureau scores to cash-flow and everyday business data, with clear consumer permission named as the condition 67.
- Fintech lenders and crypto firms are seeking bank charters and licences to fund and offer lending directly 89.
AI agents enter mortgage origination workflows
Several mortgage software vendors launched or expanded AI tools for loan officers and document handling this week 123.
nCino launched a loan officer productivity suite for mortgage that brings AI guidance and automation together, aimed at preapproval bottlenecks 1011. Blend added a tenth lender to its AI-powered mortgage platform 2. MeridianLink's AI document agent went live with three lenders 3.
Money is following. Vesta raised a $30 million Series B to bring AI agents into mortgage paperwork 45. Tavant launched a data platform aimed at cutting mortgage lending costs 12. The risk side is also in view: the Brightstar chief warned the UK mortgage sector about AI fraud risk 13.
What it means: Institutions renewing or selecting origination systems should expect AI agents on every vendor roadmap and should test how those agents are governed, evidenced and protected against fraud before relying on them.
Questions for vendors:
- Which tasks in the loan file does the AI agent complete without a human, and how is each action logged for audit?
- How many lenders run the agent in production, and what override or error rates do they see?
- How does the system detect AI-generated or altered documents submitted by applicants or intermediaries?

Broker channel shifts as BOQ leans on digital
BOQ's mortgage book shrank as the bank flagged reduced reliance on brokers, while vendors kept building tools for brokers elsewhere 1415.
In Australia, BOQ's mortgage book fell as the bank flagged reduced reliance on brokers 14. Mortgage Professional America linked the narrowing book to BOQ's digital migration 16.
Elsewhere, vendors are building for brokers. Pineapple Financial rebranded as Pentiv and launched an intelligence platform for mortgage agents and brokerages 15. PLACE acquired Ardley to expand its push to turn existing borrowers into new loans 17. One Mortgage System integrated property valuation technology into lending workflows 18. Mortgage Professional America examined where AI can help brokers find revenue when new deals are scarce 19.
What it means: Lenders weighing a shift from broker to direct digital channels should plan for volume effects during migration, and broker-facing lenders should expect brokers to arrive with more data and tooling of their own.
Questions for vendors:
- Can the same origination workflow serve broker and direct digital applications without duplicate rules?
- Which broker platforms and valuation services does the system integrate with today, and which are on the roadmap?

Small-business lending: data-led, banker-decided
US banks are pushing for small-business growth while lending decisions draw on business data with bankers still making the call 2021.
M&T Bank's record SBA 7(a) lending drew investor attention this week 22. U.S. Bank, following its launch of business credit cards, is seeking small-business customers by bundling services, CFO John Stern said 20.
The method is shifting too. Small-business lending is looking beyond credit scores to everyday business data 7. Forbes reported that in small-business lending, AI reads the numbers but bankers still make the call 21. Smaller players see an opening of their own: Apple Bank's CEO said smaller players need larger lenders to slip up to get a foot in the door 23.
What it means: Business lenders should expect competitors to bundle credit with other services and to use transaction data in assessment, while keeping a clear human decision point that supervisors and customers can see.
Questions for vendors:
- Which business data sources, such as bank feeds or accounting data, can feed the credit assessment, and how is each one verified?
- How does the workflow record where AI analysis ended and the banker's decision began?

Credit data widens, with consent as the condition
Bureaus, networks and bankers are promoting wider credit data, with clear consumer permission named as a condition 62425.
The ABA Banking Journal argued that cash-flow underwriting can improve access to credit, but only with clear consumer permission 6. TransUnion and Bankrate teamed up on more personalised credit offers, with TransUnion saying the work delivers smarter matching for millions of Americans 24. Mastercard published material on expanding access to credit through smarter insights and on smarter consumer credit decisioning 2625.
Credit data assets are also changing hands. The London Stock Exchange Group confirmed it is in talks to buy credit specialist Octus from private equity group Permira in a $3.5 billion deal 27.
What it means: Using cash-flow and other non-bureau data can widen approvals, but institutions will need consent records and data lineage that stand up to customer complaints and supervisory review.
Questions for vendors:
- How does the platform capture, store and revoke consumer consent for cash-flow and account data?
- Which data sources beyond the bureau feed each decision, and can they be switched on or off by product?

Fintech lenders move toward bank licences
Upgrade applied for a Nevada industrial loan bank charter and Kraken's parent agreed to buy Saldo Bank to offer lending in Europe 89.
Upgrade applied to establish a Nevada-chartered industrial loan bank and named a SoFi alum and longtime regulator as CEO of the proposed bank 82829. The parent of crypto exchange Kraken agreed to buy Finland-based Saldo Bank, a move that would let it offer deposits and lending products in Europe 9.
Platform and funding moves continued. KOHO adopted the LoanPro platform to scale its digital finance offering 30. ID Finance arranged €545m in debt and equity for its credit platform Plazo 31. Credit Agricole announced Credit Agricole Deutschland, a digital bank for the German market 32.
What it means: Fintechs with their own charters gain deposit funding for consumer credit, so incumbents should expect firmer competition on personal loans and cards, particularly in fully digital journeys.
Questions for vendors:
- How quickly can a new consumer credit product be configured and launched on the platform?
- Which of your clients run the platform under a bank charter, and what supervisory reporting does it support?
