- Cross-border reach is widening through regional and instant rails and new payment licences 78910.
- Issuing and spend platforms are consolidating card and non-card payments and adding AI agents for business customers 111213.
Card networks put stablecoins into production
Visa and Mastercard both launched stablecoin capabilities on their networks this week 12.
Visa announced that Visa Direct stablecoin capabilities are moving from pilot stage to commercial deployment 114. Coverage framed the change as putting stablecoins inside Visa Direct to speed up global payouts 15. Mastercard and BVNK launched a global money platform that brings fiat and stablecoin payments together 2.
Reporting on the Mastercard platform said it lets banks hold stablecoins and dollars in one account 4. Stripe and Plasma announced a collaboration to launch multi-currency stablecoin cards for people and businesses spending across currencies and markets 16. Separately, stablecoins are being pitched as a way to release cash locked in prefunding 17.
What it means: Payout, card and treasury teams can expect stablecoin options to arrive through existing network relationships rather than separate crypto providers. Settlement, reconciliation and liquidity controls will need to cover token balances alongside fiat.
Questions for vendors:
- Which stablecoins and blockchains does your network service support, and who carries reserve and redemption risk?
- How are stablecoin legs shown in settlement files and reconciliation reports?
- What happens to a payout if the stablecoin leg fails or the token loses its peg?

Banks wire tokenised money into core systems
Banks in the US, Japan and Korea took stablecoins into core systems, pilots and trials 3518.
Cross River Bank announced it is partnering with Ripple to embed Ripple's stablecoin into its operating system 3. PYMNTS reported the aim as powering 24/7 global money transfers 19. In Japan, SMBC, Mizuho Bank, MUFG Bank, Mitsubishi UFJ Trust and Banking Corporation and TISI Inc. completed a stablecoin proof of concept run from 17 July to 23 July 2026 5.
Toss and Gwangju Bank trialled stablecoin QR code payments 18. Sony Bank filed for a US bank charter to launch a PlayStation stablecoin 20. Episode Six launched Verified Backing, real-time backing verification for tokenised money from its E6 Token Control Ledger 6. Research found 88% of senior finance professionals at internationally active SMEs think stablecoins could improve cross-border B2B collections, but just 27% currently accept them 21.
What it means: Core banking, ledger and AML teams will be asked how token balances, reserve checks and 24/7 settlement fit existing controls. Institutions serving business clients may see demand for stablecoin collections before their own policy is settled.
Questions for vendors:
- Can your core or ledger record stablecoin balances natively, and how are they reconciled to fiat?
- How do you verify reserve backing in real time, and what evidence can our auditors see?
- How does 24/7 token settlement interact with our batch end-of-day processes?

Cross-border reach widens through rails and licences
Ethiopia joined PAPSS and the ECB sought members for a TIPS cross-border group, while payment firms added licences and payout reach 7822.
The National Bank of Ethiopia and PAPSS announced that Ethiopia has officially joined the PAPSS network 723. The European Central Bank called for expressions of interest in a TIPS cross-border market contact group 8. Unit added SWIFT payouts to more than 190 countries 22.
Licences also widened reach. Ant International secured UAE payment and SVF licences 9, and Taptap Send expanded to Bahrain with a CBB payment licence 10. In the UK, Brite Payments rolled out Pay by Bank after securing an FCA licence 24, and ISX Financial partnered with Mastercard on global account-to-account payments 25. Nationwide and Form3 discussed the UK's Retail Payments Infrastructure Board transition at Sibos 2026 26.
What it means: Instant and regional rails are linking up, so correspondent routes are no longer the only option for many corridors. Institutions should expect more licensed non-bank competitors in remittance and pay by bank flows.
Questions for vendors:
- Which instant and regional rails, such as TIPS or PAPSS, can you reach directly today?
- How do you carry ISO 20022 data across rails with different message formats?
- What licences do you hold in each market where you will move our customers' funds?

- How are actions taken by AI assistants authenticated, limited and logged on our card programmes?
- Who carries credit and fraud loss on a white-label instalment card?
- Can card and non-card payments share one ledger, limits and reporting in your platform?

What it means: Interchange economics for US merchants and issuers remain unsettled until the court rules. Payment screening rules should be checked against the new FinCEN typology.
Questions for vendors:
- How quickly can your screening rules be updated for a new FinCEN alert typology?
