Life insurance claims under scrutiny in Australia

APRA published life insurance claims and disputes statistics in the same week ifa reported sanctions on life insurers over claims delays and consent failures 12.

APRA published its life insurance claims and disputes statistics on 16 October 2026 1. The publication reports on claims and disputes across life insurance 1.

In the same week, ifa reported that life insurers had been sanctioned over claims delays and consent failures 2. The report points to two failings: slow handling of claims and failures around consent 2. Together the two items put claims timeliness and consent handling, and the systems that record them, in front of Australian life insurers 12.

What it means: Life insurers need to evidence claim timeframes and consent records from their claims and policy systems on demand. Gaps in workflow tracking or consent capture become a regulatory exposure, not only an operational one.

Questions for vendors:

  1. Can your claims module report elapsed time at each claim stage and flag claims at risk of breaching timeframes?
  2. How does the platform capture, store and evidence customer consent across the claim lifecycle?
  3. What reporting do you provide to support APRA claims and disputes data submissions?

Insider fraud inside the claims function

Two US cases charged claims staff with defrauding the insurers they worked for, one involving nearly $1 million 34.

Three members of a New Jersey family have been charged over a homeowners' insurance fraud and bribery scheme involving an Assurance Insurance Co. claims examiner, which generated more than $100,000 according to the charges 3. Separately, a former claims adjuster has been charged with defrauding the Pennsylvania insurer he worked for of nearly $1 million, after creating a law firm and a fake accident claim 4.

In both cases the alleged scheme relied on authority held inside the insurer's own claims process 34.

What it means: Fraud controls that watch only claimant behaviour will miss schemes run by staff. Insurers should test whether their claims platforms enforce segregation of duties and surface unusual payee or approval patterns by handler.

Questions for vendors:

  1. Does your fraud detection score staff and handler behaviour as well as claimant behaviour?
  2. How does the claims system enforce segregation of duties between claim setup, approval and payment?
  3. Can new payees, such as law firms, be held for independent verification before payment?

Claims handling moves to cloud and app channels

SiriusPoint will implement DOCOsoft's AI-powered cloud-native SaaS claims platform, while Lemonade launched app-based renters cover in Hawaii 510.

DOCOsoft, an Irish claims technology provider to global (re)insurers, has partnered with specialty underwriter SiriusPoint to implement DOCOsoft Vew 5. Vew is described as an AI-powered, cloud-native SaaS claims platform 5.

At the personal lines end, Lemonade has launched renters insurance in Hawaii 10. Its policies are available through its app, where customers can get quotes, buy and update policies and file claims 10. Both moves put claims handling on cloud-delivered or app channels, from specialty lines through to renters cover 105.

What it means: Claims is increasingly bought as a SaaS service, which shifts the buyer's attention to data ownership, AI controls and exit terms. Self-service claims lodgement is now a baseline expectation in personal lines.

Questions for vendors:

  1. Which AI functions in the claims platform make or recommend decisions, and how are they explained and audited?
  2. What are the data export and exit provisions if we leave the SaaS platform?
  3. Can customers lodge and track claims through our own app using your APIs?

Reinsurance comes closer to the core

Generali launched a Lloyd's syndicate to take a share of its outward reinsurance, and INTX is positioning reinsurance at the centre of modernisation 67.

Generali has entered the Lloyd's marketplace with the launch of Syndicate 2031 Red Bridge 6. The syndicate will assume a share of the carrier's outward reinsurance placements across multiple lines of business 6. The move keeps part of Generali's outward placements within a vehicle it has launched itself 6.

FinTech Global profiled how INTX is putting reinsurance at the centre of insurance modernisation 7. Both stories treat reinsurance as part of the carrier's own operating model and technology, not a separate back-office step 67.

What it means: Insurers modernising policy and claims systems should check how ceded positions will be tracked alongside policy and claims data. Reinsurance left in spreadsheets or a standalone system becomes harder to justify as placement structures grow more complex.

Questions for vendors:

  1. How does your core platform record ceded share at policy and claim level across multiple treaties?
  2. Can reinsurance recoveries be calculated automatically from claims transactions?
  3. Do you support captive or affiliated reinsurers within the same ceded programme?

A crowded AI vendor field and model independence

Insurance Business reports an insurtech AI shakeout looms as start-ups crowd the market, while a viewpoint urges insurers to keep model independence 89.

Insurance Business reports that an insurtech AI shakeout looms as start-ups crowd the market 8. Capital still reaches some players: Stand, which strengthens and insures homes in natural catastrophe regions, raised $70m in a Series C at a $1bn valuation 11.

An Insurance Journal viewpoint argues that many enterprises treat AI adoption like a vendor selection exercise, and that model independence matters more 9. Coalition says cyber risk can hold flat for years then jump once attackers exploit a new technology, and sees AI on a similar path 12.

What it means: A shakeout raises the risk that an AI supplier embedded in underwriting or claims workflows is acquired or exits. Insurers should keep the ability to swap models and suppliers without rebuilding core processes.

Questions for vendors:

  1. Can we change the underlying large language model without reworking our configured workflows?
  2. What happens to our data, prompts and configurations if your company is acquired or closes?
  3. How do you test your AI features against emerging attack techniques?
