Market scan guide · Insurance core

How to run an insurance core systems market scan

An insurance core scan covers policy administration, claims, billing and the product and rating engine behind them, for lines of business that differ as much as motor and life. The scan has to start from the lines and the distribution channels, since vendors specialise by both.

Figures from the Vederca registry as of 2026-10-13: 93 insurance core vendors, 336 products, 19 countries.

How to evaluate insurance core vendors

  1. Start from lines and channelsGeneral, life, health; direct, broker, bancassurance. A vendor deep in commercial lines may have no life product at all.
  2. Configure a product in the demonstrationAsk for one of your products, with its rating factors and endorsements, configured live, and watch who does the configuring.
  3. Follow a claimFrom first notice to payment, with a reserve change and a supplier in the middle; the claims workflow is where insurers spend.
  4. Read the data modelParty, policy, claim and billing as one model or four; the answer decides the reporting and the integration work.
  5. Check the migration recordNamed migrations of in-force books, with their elapsed time, are the evidence; policy counts alone are not.

The method for the scan as a whole, longlist to shortlist, is on the market scan page; the report template gives the headings.

The requirements that separate them

Must-haves in most scans of this category: the register's gates. Each needs evidence named beside it.

  • Product and rating configuration by the insurer without vendor code changes
  • Claims management with reserving, suppliers and payments in one workflow
  • Billing for every distribution channel and payment method the insurer uses
  • A single party and policy data model for reporting
  • Named in-force book migrations
  • Outsourcing, resilience and data terms that meet the prudential standard for insurers
